In the Curriculum

Effective curriculum design and assessment strategies are central to successfully linking teaching and research in higher education. The curriculum provides a blueprint for student learning across year levels and contexts (Stark & Lattuca, 1996). It is the organising framework that allows academic staff to determine how they will facilitate and assess students’ learning in relation to the goals, beliefs, values, traditions and philosophies of their particular discipline. High quality curriculum design is characterised by alignment of learning objectives, instructional activities and student assessment and feedback.

This section of the website provides resources for those responsible for designing and implementing curricula that integrate disciplinary research into students’ learning experiences and outcomes. It will also be useful for policy-makers in Schools, Departments and Faculties who are responsible for developing policies to promote stronger research-teaching links in their disciplinary programs of study.

Resources in this part of the website include the broad possibilities for strategies linking teaching and research in the curriculum. Each strategy is exemplified through hyperlinked examples and case studies gathered from Australian academic staff during the course of this project.

This resource addresses the important role of disciplinary differences in making links between teaching and research. We have also included:
• strategies for mapping teaching-research linkages across year levels, including in postgraduate coursework contexts
